As a close partner of Schoeps, our sustaining member Zeigermann_Audio brings a wealth of practical experience to its collaboration with the microphone manufacturer, whose development department is constantly producing exciting new products. Take, for example, the CMD42 microphone preamplifier: it combines the characteristic sound quality of all Schoeps capsules with comprehensive digital signal processing. The microphone signal is digitized directly at the capsule, opening up interesting new possibilities for sophisticated setups.

The Features

The CMD 42 operates at sample rates of up to 192 kHz and offers an extended frequency response exceeding 40 kHz. In the CMD 42’s ‘Full Mode’, the integrated signal processing includes, among other things, limiters, EQs, and mono upmix. The microphone can be integrated directly into compatible digital production environments via the two-channel AES42 output. This combination really shines with quiet signal sources and high gain settings. The CMD42 delivers results of the highest quality, particularly for digital wireless transmission on a boom pole or in sound design, which can be stretched along the time axis without any coloration.

A good combination with the Sonosax A/D converter

The Sonosax M2D2 is the ideal complement for mobile applications. This compact stereo microphone preamplifier and A/D converter features an AES42-compatible input and can supply digital microphones directly with the required AES42 supply voltage. At the same time, the M2D2 remains flexible enough to accommodate traditional analogue microphones and line signals in a wide variety of production environments.

Strong within the network too

With a dynamic range of up to 135 dB, an internal routing matrix, analog and digital outputs, a USB audio interface, a limiter, and a high-quality headphone amplifier, the M2D2 is far more than just a microphone preamp. Power supply via USB-C, battery, or Hirose 4-pin also makes it ideal for mobile applications, ranging from recording and sound design to demanding location and broadcast set-ups. In the 8-channel Sonosax AD8+ version, the preamp is also available with a PoE power supply and Dante connectivity. The AD8+ can thus be used, for example, as a decentralized stagebox or remote preamp. Via Dante, the eight input channels can be transmitted directly into an audio network; with PoE, audio transmission and power supply can be carried out via a single Ethernet cable. The combination of the CMD 42 and M2D2 highlights an important aspect of modern microphone technology: digitization does not necessarily have to take place at the end of the signal chain. It can begin right where the acoustic signal is generated, resulting in correspondingly short and controlled signal paths and extensive possibilities for further processing.
